Vocabulary Essay Example For Students

Vocabulary Essay IntroductionOne of the most fascinating aspects of words is that they all have a past. Some words in English, for example, can be shown to have been in place for more than 5000 years (P. Baldi, 1999). Ordinarily we pay little attention to the words we articulate; we concentrate instead on the meaning we intend to express and we are seldom conscious of how we express that meaning. Only if we make a mistake and we have to correct it or we have difficulty remembering a word we become conscious of our word. This means that most of us do not know where the word we use come from and how they come to have the meaning they do. History and morphology of the word MotherThe idea of the mother goddess was invented in early ice age, some 25,000-30,000 years ago. She and her life giving breasts were called omma from which we have the words akin to maternal, matter, and mother. By the late ice age the Semites had shortened omma to om. The Dravidians of India are Semites who migrated to India after the ice age. They still call mother goddess omm. Om is also the present day Arabic word for female and mother. Omma became ma among the Iranians, meaning the female breast. From ma we have the Iranian maman. Also, we have the Iranian ma-Dar (earlier ma-tar) meaning breast which became mater in Latin, modor in Old English (725), madre in modern Italian, and mother in modern English (1425), (R.K.Barnhant, 2000). buy custom Advantages and Controversy of U.S. essay

buy custom Advantages and Controversy of U.S. essay Question 1 Watch the documentary A Class Divided, the classic study of the third grade class experiment of the "blue eyes" and "brown eyes" located in the lecture section this week (or at the link below). Then respond to the following questions: Is this ethical? Does the end justify the means? Is this still needed today? The act of discriminating others because of their eye color is not ethical. It humiliates those who are considered as inferiors and give privileges to the superiors. What was happening in this documentary can be considered ethical because all the children were subjected to same treatment. The blue eyed and the brown eyed were both considered as superior at one time and inferior at another. Therefore this was a fair trial and justifiable and can be considered ethical with all means. In this documentary we can say the end justify the means. This is so because at first the children who were involved in this experiment could not tell whether it was morally correct or not. After fourteen years, we see the same students explaining how they benefited from this experiment and the way they disliked discrimination of any kind. This is also supported by how organizations are applying this experiment to discourage discrimination. In fact, they are calling teacher Jane Elliott to train their staf f on the discrimination issue(Peters, 1987). Although people are seems to be understanding that we are all equal there are those who still holds their beliefs that some people are more equal than others. This documentary is still needed today so that it can help those who are thinking they are superior to others. It will also assist those who are considered as minorities or inferiors to be valued and be given equal opportunities like others. It was also noted that when the students viewed this documentary after fourteen years they recommended that everyone should have such kind of an experience so that they can kick discrimination away from their nation. Question 2 One of the goals of the civil rights movement was to ensure equal opportunity for every U.S. citizen, irrespective of race. When the civil rights movement began, the legal system did not grat the same rights to blacks and other minorities as it did to whites. Today, those laws have been changed, leading some to argue that the U.S. has achieved a level playing field for all. Consider what Koppelman has to say about the idea of a level playing field. Do you think the playing field has been leveled? Is success based exclusively on merit and luck, or is race-based "privilege" still a factor? How was affirmative action policy crafted to address issues of privilege? Has it been successful? In my opinion I do not think the level playing field has been achieved. There is a clear indication that the level playing field has not been achieved as you can still hear people talking of reverse discrimination. Reverse discrimination is where by the groups which are considered to minority are given special consideration in terms of employment opportunities and other areas like public university admissions. Success of each and every one of us is supposed to be based on merit and luck, although this is not the case where discrimination is practiced. Discrimination can hinder people with better qualifications from excelling in life and instead favor those who have god fathers despite them be not qualified. Racism can also hinder a qualified professional from excelling and favor the unqualified. In a world where discrimination is practiced there is no way we can say success is exclusively based on merit and luck, races of these policies include racial quotas or gender quotas for collegiate admission. Some states such as California and Washington have prohibited affirmative action thus there is no way it can be considered as successful.; Question 3 Some people argue that racism is primarily a belief or attitude and that anyone who unfairly judges another based on race is racist. Others argue that racism is about action and institutional discrimination, therefore only those with the power to act, and not those who are the targets of discrimination, can be racist. Using the racism concepts discussed in Chp. 8 of Koppelman and the article Race: Too Hot to Touch linked below, which argument do you find convincing and why? Is institutional racism more offensive than individual racism? Is there a difference between racism and prejudice? If so, what is the difference? Racism being a belief or attitude and that anyone who unfairly judges another based on race is racist can be considered convincing than racism being an action and institution discrimination. This is so because even in those institutions it is individuals who are discriminating their companions but not the institution itself. Although the institution can give power to certain groups to discriminate their companions, I do believe that discrimination will mostly depend on your attitude towards the other group. If you have a positive attitude towards them you will try to support them and may be try to urge the management to treat them fairly as they are still human beings. Individual racism is more offensive than institutional racism because you can always change from the institution which is discriminating you but it is difficult to stay away from someone who is discriminating. In one or the other you will have to collide with these individuals who are discriminating you and you always feel humiliated in their presence. There is a big difference between racism and prejudice. Racism is the practice whereby there is different treatment to some groups of people both socially and legally and is then justified by recourse to racial stereotyping. On the other hand prejudice can be considered as a prejudgment made about someone or something before having adequate knowledge to determine the accuracy of your judgment(Brown, 2010). Network Security & Applications Research Proposal

Network Security & Applications - Research Proposal Example Thus, this is very important to train the basic computer users and information systems manager in mind, teaching the ideas required to read through the hype in the marketplace and recognize threats associated with the computer security and how to cope with them (Network Security, 2010; Curtin, 1997). In addition, the network security is turning out to be more and more significant in view of the fact that people spend more and more time connected. In this scenario, compromise on network security is frequently much easier than compromise on physical or local security, and is much more frequent. However, there are numerous good tools available to help improve network security, as well as majority of them are shipping with Windows features (The Linux Documentation Project, 2010). The new web based or web-supported tools offer a range of effective software features and services to the consumers, workers and business associates. These services could be easily managed and handled. Additiona lly, the new information technology offers access to a major business resource such as the web server, which gives the capability to access various other useful information resources, for instance database servers (ITSecurity).

Dance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 2

Dance - Essay Example Indeed, the term â€Å"confiscation† as used in Lesson 1 sought to integrate African dance traditions into the American culture. The terms â€Å"fusion† and â€Å"confiscation† are very significant in the American culture especially with reference to the American dance and society since they play a huge role in creating a new American dance form. The term fusion refers to the aspect of creating a singular and original, high quality show, which blends dance, fashion, and music to establish a high-end performance (â€Å"York Media† 1). Fusion brings a diverse collection of best dancers, models, musicians, artists, fashion designers, hairdressers, and make-up artists to create an original and unique music and dance performance in America (â€Å"York University† 1). In terms of dance and society, confiscation refers to the adoption of techniques and effects from native cultures into the American dance and society (Rogers 10). With reference to cultures and dance, confiscation integrates the conflicting association between the African dance traditions and the American culture. The Ghost dance is a dance practice that exemplifies "confiscation" of dance forms to "create" a new American dance form. From the Ghost Dance, we can indeed derive the fact that there was a confiscation of techniques and effects from native cultures into the American dance and society. The immigration of Indians and the integration of Wodziwobs teachings with the American traditions led to the confiscation (â€Å"United States History† 1). Notably, the American belief systems adopted the religious attributes of Ghost Dance movement. This is clear where the dancers performed the dance with a belief of getting cure for their illness. This related to the ritual intentions as depicted by Wodziwob who started the dance. They disregarded the ritual beliefs and adopted

Asian Drama- How do plays 2- 3 plays(you pick) following the Han Research Paper

Asian Drama- How do plays 2- 3 plays(you pick) following the Han Dynasty in China reflect back to Confucianism - Research Paper Example 137). When the Han dynasty replaced the Qin dynasty what came alive was the fundamental question of governmental and social philosophy: is the new dynasty going to resemble the Qin, a legalist dynasty that was purely dedicated to the principle of bureaucracy and moral governance in the state interest and wealth? On the other hand, was it to return to the feudal times experienced in the past, adopting, perhaps, the values of Confucian governance by tradition and virtue? Alternatively, the new dynasty would have offered a more fundamental reaction against the previous dynasty of Qin. The answers that answered these questions were to shape the future of china. Usually, the early Han is referred to the western Han. This is because its capital city, which was the chang’na city, was located in the western part almost in the same location as Qin capital and the western Zhou. The dynasty of Han that was revived ruled from the eastern Zhou capital site of the river Luo, in the Luoyang city. The founder of this Dynasty, the Han dynasty, was born a peasant. The emperor of Qin was thrown into chaos when people started rebelling against it. Despite the fact that the initial rebel, Chen She, was killed just after the rebellion began, his success inspired men who had leadership abilities or local renown to forming their own armies to fight against the Qin dynasty. Among these men who were rebelling, there was the acknowledgement of a young man who was well bred and ruthless who came from a society of aristocracy in the state of Chu. He was called Xiang Yu. He was acknowledged the leading figure in the entire china for a very short time after the Qin dynasty fell. Liu bang, a fellow rebel, competed for primacy during the rebellion against Xiang Yu. It was Liu’s army that fought and led a rebellion against the Qin into its homeland and received the Ziying, who was the heir of Qin, surrender. Since Xiang Yu had superior powers, Liu was

John Miltons Struggle With Society Essay -- Biography Biographies Ess

John Milton's Struggle With Society John Milton, unlike so many other authors and public figures during the English Civil War, is remarkably easy to place within a historical context. As a vocal supporter of the Commonwealth, Milton left a great deal of information and writings behind to explain precisely how he fit into 17th century England. As Secretary for Foreign Tongues, or Latin Secretary, he worked closely with many of the foremost members of the anti-monarchial regime, such as Oliver Cromwell. As politically active as he was, Milton was equally vocal on matters of religion; he was prolific in his writings against both the Catholic and Apostolic churches. Milton's beliefs and political views were diverse and unique; thus, as Andrew Milner is quoted in Thomas Corn's work, Milton was, "in fact, an Independent pure and simple" (113). Though Milton's political, social, and religious views are made stunningly clear through an examination of the large body of evidence he left behind, it remains difficult to comprehend the significance of his major epics, including Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes. While they are undoubtedly significant as reflections on biblical stories, there seems to be a deeper significance that relates directly to Milton's political and religious beliefs. Indeed, it seems clear that Milton intended not merely to retell the biblical stories, but to infuse them with significance beyond mere religion. In order to understand most anything about Milton, one must first understand Milton's world; one must understand the English Revolution and its historical roots. The revolution began in 1579 with the reformation parliament that formed under Henry VIII. Though parliament itself w... ...d Corns, Thomas N. Safety and Protection Services

In the process of creating a security agreement, the first essential task which we should be able to undertake is to differentiate what are those locations as well as specific conditions which the security would be addressed through public good — those that would be provided by the local government — as well as the security issues that would be addressed by private enterprise. Such a differentiation would allow for us to make specific boundaries and avoid security coverage overlaps between those which would be provided by the government and that was what shall be covered by the local agencies which the company would hire. The reason why we would like to avoid overlaps in outlining the report and specify which issues are addressed by one group and which ones are addressed by another is that it would not only avoid regulatory and conflict of interest overlaps but also the cost efficient as well. We must remember that especially for a public good provisions such as security of the company which the government would be providing for the firm, then they have a limited budget in order to do this. Also, the security of the company with respect to the private enterprise which shall be addressed by our firm should also be cost efficient. Recent literature reflecting the costs of private security reflected that they are consistently increasing over the years. We would not want to have overlapping costs that would further create an inefficiency condition for the company (Commission & Toulson, 2004). In the discussion of who would be concerned providing security, there are two units and agencies which we should address. These agencies, however, are only the first step in information dissemination and coordination of security for the firm. These two are the local government units that would be providing security, as well as the security agencies as well as the security staff of the company. They are the two essential units where large focus must be given in drafting a security agreement. However, there also has to be circulating information across both the staff of the company and the government units so that they too may be informed of the further security issues that have to be addressed. The reason for this is that especially in a sensitive matters such as private protection — especially if our company has high in assets, may they be tangible or intangible — there is the constant danger of misinformation and might lead to further problems in the future if those which are in full — even in the smallest sense — are misinformed. The basic primary service that we would like the safety and security services of the law enforcement department of the local government units to perform are those that involve security coverage from the immediate surroundings of the companies location . However what we must remember is that local government agencies in policing already have the responsibility of protecting the surroundings of such public locations. With the security draft must focus on, however, is the schedule time frames or in areas highly sensitive data that are stored within the perimeter of the company. This may be done through interaction with local government units involving security and policing with the respective security agencies and departments of our company. Relevant research reflects higher risk security frameworks especially in institutions that have data assets which would be essential for the success of competition. In discussing security concerns between the company and the policing agencies, the focus must not only be two immediate security and physical assets but also in data security as well this would be discussed later on and further reports (Stamp, 2005). Another probable help the local law enforcement agencies may give to the company is a fast response policy in the case that incidents are reported by the security departments of the firm. This is usually already done in major metropolitan areas although there are times when specific overlaps in misinformation cause for various security holes exist. What the draft and suggestion must identify are the standard operating procedures for local government security in the case that they are required — in an emergency or otherwise — by the security departments of the company. Although it may not be explicitly stated by the government, the agreement, and company, there also probable ways are there to be better security support for such local policing units by giving preferential protection and security response times — even dedicated response servers and direct lines — to the security departments of the company. What we as business analysts would like to compare it to is an indirect method of outsourcing security but only in specific locations in specific instances so that the costs of the hiring additional security in-house would be less than those from the outsourced perspective (Commission & Toulson, 2004). Of course, however, did not reply completely on the security that is provided by local policing agencies. Also, even given the fact that there is a ready and in-house security department at the company, having the ability to tap the resources from outside security units such as those that are provided by the government does not necessarily mean that local security could slack off and relax. In fact, outsourcing and removing in-house the total security method of the company should logically make the company's own security department more vigilant because of the scattered holes and overlaps that an outside security unit with prose. The primary safety and security services that would be performed in-house are those which first, covered a specific geographic insight location of the company. It would be a greater security risk if outside security units that are provided by the government are allowed to roam freely within the premises of the firm. Although it may in fact decrease costs with relation to the amount that are paid to in-house security services, it nevertheless significantly increases risk of outside infiltration of the firm because of the lack of checks, balances, and specific operational controls when making use of outside security in securing the inside of the structures. Therefore, in the draft, we should be able to indicate that outside security units which are provided by the government may only enter the premises upon request for additional assistance in-house security units. Also, because it is completely logical that it is the security department of the company which knows the sensitivity of assets within the firm, as well as the day-to-day security concerns of the company, it is they who have the responsibility of training and informing the outside security resources which would be provided by the government in understanding the way the company works to tighten and cover the various security holes that may be found. In the draft, it is recommended that more responsibilities are placed on in-house security units because of the expected approval of such agreement — the less costs that are crude by the government for security of the company, the more likely it is that the mayor would prove such an agreement. However, we must also make sure that the benefits that the company which received with respect to the efficiency would be experienced by the in-house security Department would be just equal to the benefits that would be taken by the local government units for security (Wyman, 1999). Lastly, the draft should include what are the specific responsibilities that would be done jointly by the local policing agency and the in-house security department of the company. In this respect, the responsibilities included should cover those involving the safety and security of local employees and keeping resources. Unlike tangible assets and data, human resources and employees of the company are allowed to move around. As a result, there is no specific covert locations that could be wisely allocated either to in-house security or to policing agencies. Therefore, it would eventually be the responsibility of the two units to cover the safety and security of employees. However, it is the local policing agency which is largely responsible for the outside safety of employees, while the responsibility of the in-house security of the company would be to make sure that only employees have access to the company's premises as well as the assets that are assigned to employee use. These are the conditions and important factors that should be included in the draft to be written that would be submitted to the mayor of the city. Although there are still other specific minor issues that have not been addressed, these, at least, are the general frameworks that must be followed in drawing an agreement between the two security units and departments.
